How to Change Windows 8 Password for Local Account and Microsoft Account

If you've forgotten your Windows 8 password, there are a few ways to recover access to your account. If you're using a Microsoft account, you can reset your password online. If you're using a local account, you'll need to use a password reset disk or the Recovery Console.

If you're using a Microsoft account, the process for resetting your password is pretty straightforward. Just head to the Microsoft account password reset page, enter the email address or phone number associated with your account, and follow the instructions. You'll be asked to enter a code that will be sent to your email address or phone, and then you'll be able to create a new password.

If you're using a local account, the process is a little more complicated. If you have a password reset disk, you can use that to reset your password. If you don't have a password reset disk, you'll need to use the Recovery Console.

To use a password reset disk, insert the disk into your computer and follow the prompts. You'll be asked to enter your new password twice, and then you'll be able to log into your account.

To use the Recovery Console, you'll need to boot from your Windows 8 installation disc or a recovery disc. Once you've done that, select the Repair your computer option and then choose Command Prompt. From there, you'll need to type in the following commands:

cd C:WindowsSystem32

ren Utilman.exe Utilman.exe.bak

copy cmd.exe Utilman.exe

exit

Reboot your computer and press the Windows key + U to open the Utility Manager. From there, you can type in the command prompt and reset your password.

Once you've reset your password, it's a good idea to create a password reset disk. That way, if you ever forget your password again, you'll be able to reset it without having to go through the Recovery Console.

To create a password reset disk, insert a USB drive into your computer and open the Control Panel. Click on User Accounts and then click on the Create a password reset disk link. Follow the prompts to create your disk.

If you ever forget your Windows 8 password, now you know how to reset it. Whether you're using a Microsoft account or a local account, there's a way to get back into your account. Just be sure to create a password reset disk so you don't have to go through the Recovery Console next time you forget your password.
